Ukranian Egg Decorating

Decorating pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) is part of Easter preparation by Ukrainians and many other East-Central European groups. The word pysanky comes from the Slavic word for “writing.”

Decorating Easter eggs in the Ukrainian style involves the process of drawing intricate designs using beeswax with a tool called a kistka and dying the eggs in successive layers. Symbols and colors are chosen to represent special meanings, and the process is accompanied by prayers and good wishes for the recipient of the egg. To give a pysanka is to give a symbolic gift of life.

This day is for those who are new to the art of Ukrainian Egg decorating, as well as those who have already learned the basics.

This program can be combined with Spring Basket Making for a mid-winter reflective retreat and to create an Easter décor item for your home or as a gift for a special friend.
