Mysticism: "Largeness of Spirit": A Lenten Reflection

 Mysticism “Largeness of Spirit”.

In a dualistic culture, we separate mystics and prophets, the inner life and the outer outreach, our contemplation and action. In a production-oriented, time-conscious culture, we “spend” our time getting things done. We wonder, “how did Jesus manage to be a prophet-in-the-midst and a mystic at the same time?”

In our own world of pressing needs, can we manage to be both?

Today a profound scientific and spiritual consciousness is opening us to a new sense of integration. We begin to see as Jesus saw: wholeness in the graced flow of creation and human energies, inner and outer intertwined, one. Cynthia Bourgeault gave a great naming for this unity in Jesus: “freewheeling largeness of spirit!” We awaken to Mystery that ignites our minds and widens our hearts for mystic-active vocations of love.
