Creating Connections for Clean Water (Situations of Substance series)

“For many of us, clean water is so plentiful and readily available that we rarely, if ever, pause to consider what life would be like without it.”

- Marcus Samuelsson

Situations of Substance series
This series focuses on on-going societal “situations”—complex and troubling conditions we want to change.  Situations are not as simple as right and wrong; they are cultural and systemic, requiring of us multi-dimensional solutions of involvement and creativity as responsible citizens and people of faith.  The series is coordinated by Miriam Brown, OP.

The stage is set for mining and other industry to expand, but at what cost?  Degradation of Wisconsin’s rivers, wells, and aquafers is already happening.  In 2015, Midwest Environmental Advocates filed a Petition for Corrective Action asking the Environmental Protection Agency to oversee resolution of more than seventy-five deficiencies in the WDNR’s implementation of the Clean Water Act.  Jacklyn will unpack environmental issues facing Wisconsin’s tribal communities and share her experience of engaging with them in the face of continued adversity.  How can we connect for clean water?

Tuesday, January 22, 2019
6:30-8:30

Jacklyn Velasquez, JD, is an Equal Justice Works Fellow sponsored by Lynde Uihlein, hosted by Midwest Environmental Advocates.  She is a former environmental technician and member of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe of the Owens Valley in California.  During her time at Vermont Law School, she was an Environmental Mission Scholar and continues to work with Wisconsin tribes to hold the State accountable to the Clear Water Act.
