“Seven Sacred Pauses: Living Mindfully Through the Hours" with Macrina Wiederkehr and Velma Frye

“Each hour has its own unique mood and special grace. You can learn to enter into the spirit of the hour wherever you are. No matter what you are doing, you can pause to touch the grace of the hour.”

- Macrina Wiederkehr

By exploring the ancient practice of intentional sacred pauses, the mystical possibilities of every moment are revealed.

In this retreat, you will be ushered into the contemplative practice of Soul-Time.  Being present to body, mind, heart, and spirit, you become available to God breathing in you.

Macrina and Velma will use the tools of time, poetry, song, story, prayer, and ritual to teach the art of living mindfully.  You will be led through one day of intentional silence beginning with Friday evening, as you are oriented into the Great Silence and the Holy Darkness.  Saturday will be a continuing practice of the seven sacred pauses as we meet pre-dawn, dawn, mid-morning, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night.

Our culmination will be embracing the new dawn on Sunday morning. Thus you will have learned how to sing a melody of blessing with your life.

Themes from Sister Macrina’s book, Seven Sacred Pauses:  Living Mindfully Through the Hours, along with chants and songs from Velma’s accompanying CD, Seven Sacred Pauses: Singing Mindfully Dawn Through Dark, will be used throughout the retreat.

The retreat begins at 7:00pm and concludes with the noon meal on Sunday.

Macrina Wiederkehr OSB, is well known for her creative writing and retreat ministry. As a Benedictine sister she is passionate about sharing her monastic spirituality with others.  Her deep country roots from her childhood in Arkansas connect her to the earth.  Here is where she first entered into the flow of dawn and dusk, day and night, prayer and work.  Her understanding of these sacred pauses has deepened over the years through the prayerful rhythm of community living at Scholastica Monastery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  She is currently working on her 9th book, Fifty-Two Teachers.

Velma Frye is a pianist, vocalist, music educator, and lyricist.  She has composed numerous songs that have been sung around the world in university and community choirs.  She has given concerts in Russia and Germany and has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”  Velma teaches, records, and performs a wide range of music and leads retreats and women’s singing circles.

Macrina and Velma’s collaborative work weaves mindfulness, music, and the hours of   the day.  Velma’s CD, “Seven Sacred Pauses”       is subtitled “Singing Mindfully Dawn Through Dark,” and Macrina’s book Seven Sacred Pauses is subtitled “Living Mindfully Through the Hours of the Day.”   These and other books and CDs are available at Siena Retreat Center’s bookstore.
